Arlington Heights Veterinary Hospital is offering a 2-8 week internship/externship in general practice for veterinary/rvt students. We provide wellness services including vaccines and diagnostics for commonly seen disease processes such as heartworm, FELV/FIV, and fecal floats. We cover illnesses commonly seen by a general practitioner such as inflamed eyes, infected ears, skin irritations, vomiting, diarrhea, and behavior problems. We provide wellness bloodwork as a screening process. We have drop off appointments set up for patients that present a more complicated diagnostic. We offer surgical services including soft tissue, orthopedic surgeries, and dental prophylaxis services. We have a team of 4 veterinarians and 25 supportive staff members. This is an opportunity to explore if general practice is for you.
You will be paired with a veterinarian and follow them through their daily duties. The veterinarians have days divided into 3 main categories; surgery, wellness exams, and drop offs which require diagnostic work ups and are more complicated internal medicine cases.
There are a few emergencies accepted daily so you will be exposed to everything that a general practitioner will see. The main idea behind this internship/externship will be to see if this is the kind of work that you would be interested in pursuing. You will learn thorough physical exams, how to set up diagnostic plans, how to approach surgeries expected of a general practice, and triage if emergency cases present. Perhaps the most important aspect you will learn is how to communicate with clients and what to expect when dealing with owners.
